I have great sympathy for the family of Horatio Chapple and for the other young people injured in the polar bear attack, but it seems clear that the organisers of the expedition did not take proper precautions. Someone should have been on guard. Furthermore, it seems that the hysterical level of gun control in the UK has contributed. I can't help thinking that this wouldn't have happened if British people were more habituated to using guns.

People in the UK aren't allowed defensive weapons ... we are constantly told that the police will protect us. Truth of the matter is that the police just pick up the pieces after the event. lt's sounding as though the same can be said of this tragic event, the protection just wasn't there.
As the old saying goes:
when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.
However, in this case there's no excuse, as is shown in the Telegraph report. There was a known danger, and the organisers did not take precautions, and were not prepared.
